Captain Jesse F. Potter Letter Book, 1855-1863.

Contains correspondence, including instructions and lists of disbursements, between Capt. Jesse F. Potter, of the ships Boston, Oneida, and Governor Langdon, and various agents (the attorneys William Perkins of Boston, I. C. Spaulding of Honolulu, Horton D. Walker of Portsmouth, New Hampshire, Thomas S. and Horario Hathaway of New Bedford and the firm Russell and Sturgis. The letters concern trade in goods including hemp, sugar, rice, tea, cigars, naval stores, indigo, coal and Japan wood from ports such as New York, Acapulco, Honolulu, Hong Kong, Manila, Calcutta, Shanghai, Batavia, and South America.

The U.S.S. Steam sloop Oneida was a screw corvette of 1032 tons and nine guns. Under the command of United States naval officer S.
